When Mary anointed Jesus at Simon the Leper's house, Jesus explained that she had done so in preparation for His burial. She shattered the bottle over His head and sprayed the perfume on him. For a funeral in the ancient Mediterranean world, it was customary to smash the perfume bottle.
This high-quality anointing oil is produced near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Blended with nard and made from natural, pure Jerusalem virgin olive oils.
Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (John 12:3)
